PSG Overcomes Marseille in a Shootout to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now won the prestigious cup on fourteen different times.

Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup title.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the showdown between the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille struck twice in the closing moments to take a shock lead. First, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital leveler in the dying seconds to force the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted with composure for PSG to seal a 4-1 shootout win.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the last 13 seasons.
